Sea Air and Rusty Hinges

The Salt Air Struggle: Why Norfolk Hinges Seize Up

Rusty Gate Hinges!

Have you noticed that your hinges get rusty?

Especially those outdoor - gate hinges are the most susceptible.

It's the sea air. We live in such a beautiful part of the country with fabulous view but because we are so close to the sea we have quite salty moist air.

What's the fix?

Most people will grab a can of WD-40 - we've all got one somewhere in the shed or garage haven't we…. BUT that is just a temporary fix, and in some cases can make things worse…. WD-40 is used to loosen stuck hinges but it will evaoprate. You should use a longer lasting lubricant like a silicone or lithium.

In fact, WD-40 (which is the brand name) do sell various different products including silicone and lithium sprays, not just the "Multi-Use Lubricant" that we all call "WD-40".

Or if the hinges are beyond repair, you could consider replacing them with something a little more rust resistant like galvanised steel which should last for 30 years.

This also goes for Garage doors or windows latches too….

If your garden gate is fighting you, I can strip, clean, and lubricate or replace all your external fixtures in a single morning visit.
